EVEN IF THE PERFECT IS THE ENEMY OF THE GOOD,
WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH EITHER ONE OF THOSE RIGHT NOW
What we really need is a federal government that is an enemy of the corrupt and the morally pestilent.
Last November the overwhelming majority of the U.S. electorate (those who showed up, anyway) voted for either a grumpy old psychotic with a simple (if moderately savvy), race-baiting jackass as his running mate, or a sober, calculating triangulator with a laughably transparent sales pitch and a stable full of Clinton-era policy hacks at his side.
While it is disturbing that over 58 million U.S. citizens opted for the psychotic jerk and his ignorant, neo-fascist running mate, the 66 million and change who voted for the other guy should feel neither relieved nor triumphant. Not when that other guy is making appointments like Tom Daschle:
Regarding Daschle, remember, we’re talking about a guy who not only was a consultant for one of the top health-care law firms in the country, but a board member of the Mayo Clinic (a major recipient of NIH grants) and the husband of one of America’s biggest defense lobbyists — wife Linda Hall lobbies for Lockheed-Martin and Boeing.
The release of the financial statement [Daschle] submitted to the Office of Government Ethics details for the first time exactly how, without becoming a registered lobbyist, he made millions of dollars giving public speeches and private counsel to insurers, hospitals, realtors, farmers, energy firms and telecommunications companies with complex regulatory and legislative interests in Washington.
Daschle’s expertise and insights, gleaned over 26 years in Congress, earned him more than $5 million over the past two years, including $220,000 from the health-care industry, and perks such as a chauffeured Cadillac, according to the documents.
And this is the self-dealing choad Obama wants in charge of reforming our health care system. Change you can believe in, bitches.
