Michael Klare, in an essay posted to TomDispatch, explains how the Bush administration had its ass handed to it by Russia. The Georgian episode was only the final move of a heady strategem to begin rolling back creeping U.S. involvement in Russia’s neighborhood.

Empires rise and fall. In the last decade or so, we’ve seen the crucial stages of a nation with unprecedented advantages in firepower and economic influence drastically weakening its own foundation and setting itself up for collapse. The American Empire is in steep decline because, as Jonathan Schwarz says, “everyone sane has already been eliminated from the power structure.”

This didn’t take long:

Bush announces $1 billion in aid for Georgia

I love the first line of the article, which describes the actions of the U.S. (from thousands of miles away and after doing everything in its power to surround Russia with U.S. client states) as,

Pushing back against an increasingly aggressive Moscow…

Also worthy of note is the arrogance of Condi Rice:

“…It isn’t really an impressive list to have Abkhazia and South Ossetia recognize each other,” she said.

Oh, how we must look like a nation of unrepentant assholes every time our international face opens its mouth.  One good thing about an Obama presidency will be the return of a sense of decency and decorum to our nation’s murderous imperial overreach.
