(my own comment from a Pam Spaulding post at Pandagon)

I suggest that everyone read Ted Rall’s To Afghanistan and Back, then read James Howard Kunstler’s Clusterfuck Nation, and then read Octavia Butler’s Parable series.

We have the makings of our very own Taliban situation here in the U.S., and we’re a couple of major crises away from seeing it. The assholes– like Justin Lookadoo– who are laying the foundation have their antecedents in Jesus Christ’s day, and he didn’t mince words about them:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.” (Matthew 23:15)

The Republicans’ dangerous embrace of religious extremism, coupled with all our elected (and selected) officials’ shitcanning of our foreign policy, economy, and electoral system is leading to a situation where the U.S. will soon be in dire straits, and people will likely turn to these cornpone zealots for leadership (look how so many embrace Bush, in spite of his obvious incompetence). When that happens, you might see the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, and McCarthyism all rolled into one bloody mass.

If your political fight-or-flight response is kicking in now, it has good reason.
