I’ve sometimes wondered why an urban center in the middle of the country (Chicago) has so many old forts and armories within its limits. Considering that the lion’s share of them were built in the 19th century, it presents a puzzle that I’ve only recently begun to understand. I will provide you with a few of links that may shed a bit of light on the subject: The Haymarket Riots; Fort Sheridan; The Worker Riots of 1877

Considering how the police and the FBI have often been used to spy on, infiltrate, and disrupt lawful labor organizing and civil rights groups (as per the previous post, below), this strikes me less as historical anomaly, and more as earlier development of a continuing pattern.
